Campsite setup at dusk with camping gear

10 Camping Tips Every Beginner Should Know

Whether it's your first trip or your fiftieth, a little planning makes the difference between a great weekend outdoors and a frustrating one. Here are 10 tips we swear by.

1. Pitch your tent before it gets dark

Arrive with enough daylight to set up camp, get your bearings, and figure out where the ground slopes before you're doing it by headlamp. Aim to arrive at least 2 hours before sunset.

2. Test your gear at home first

Set up a new tent in the backyard before your trip. The campsite is not the place to discover a missing pole or a broken zipper.

3. Keep your camp kitchen organized

A dedicated spot for utensils, spices, and cookware saves you from digging through bags at every meal. A hanging field galley organizer keeps everything visible and off the dirt.

4. Bring more light than you think you need

Once the sun sets, a single headlamp isn't enough for cooking, setting up, or finding things in your pack. A rechargeable tactical flashlight with a zoom beam covers both close-up camp tasks and long-range visibility.

5. Cook one-pot meals

Fewer dishes, less cleanup, and easier packing. A sturdy deep camp pot over the fire handles stews, chili, and baked beans without babysitting multiple pans.

6. Pack a real first aid kit, not an afterthought

Blisters, cuts, and bug bites are common. A stocked kit with blister pads, antihistamines, and basic wound care goes a long way.

7. Store food properly

Keep food sealed and away from your sleeping area. In bear country, use a bear canister or hang food at least 12 feet up and 6 feet from the trunk.

8. Layer your clothing

Temperatures swing more outdoors than you expect. Pack a base layer, an insulating layer, and a waterproof shell, even in summer.

9. Learn to read the weather, not just the forecast

Clouds building quickly, a sudden wind shift, or a drop in temperature can mean a storm is closer than the app says. Know your exit route.

10. Leave no trace

Pack out everything you bring in, including food scraps. Future you (and the next camper) will thank you.
